Thinking on your Feet: Communicating Clearly Under Pressure
Spontaneous speaking, or the ability to step up and say something the moment you’re called on, happens all the time in academia. Speaking clearly when you haven’t practiced what to say seems like it should be natural, but it truly is a skill that requires some thought and strategy in your approach. You have the right answer, so why can it be so hard to say it, and say it well?
Being able to communicate clearly in these situations can build trust with those you’re communicating with, and it reduces misunderstandings, which can immediately de-escalate potential future disagreements or conflict. Thinking on your feet can improve adaptability during changing circumstances. Your ability to speak effectively on the spot will boost your professional presence, making you appear more confident and competent.
The L.A.D. Academy hosted a 10-minute Microlearning session on how to enhance your skills at communicating on the fly, using the “What > So What > Now What” framework. We invite you to explore the resources that were part of that session, and start incorporating these skills today!
