Guiding Progress: Quick, Practical tips for effective mentorship
There are 6 core competencies to effective mentoring for individuals in training: effective communication, aligning expectations, assessing understanding, fostering independence, addressing cultural diversity, and promoting professional development.
The strategies you use to communicate include what you say, how you say it, when you say it, and the context in which you say it. Effective communication means listening carefully to understand, not just hear, what your mentees are thinking and feeling. Effective communication also entails minimizing or removing barriers to communication. You already use many strategies to communicate, so think of them as tools in your toolbox.
The L.A.D. Academy held a 10-minute Microlearning session on how to enhance your active listening skills. We invite you to explore the resources that were part of that session, and enhance your mentorship game!
